Believe it or not, you can start your own dog washing and grooming business right in your own home. If you have an extra room in your house or a garage, you can set up this space to clean dogs. I have found that garages are a good space to use for grooming and washing of dogs. You will first need to purchase a very large bin that can fit even the largest dog. Try to make your garage or cleaning area as comfortable as possible. Of course the dog may not care what the place looks like, but the owners might. You will want to set up a washing area, and set up a drying area. The washing area should be on a non carpeted floor. Be sure to check your state regulations on operating a business out of your home.
You can get a medium size carpet and place it in another section of the room. You can use this area as the drying area. An old dresser or plastic storage bin will come in handy for both the washing and the drying area. You can place your towels, shampoo, brushes, and other grooming equipment in the drawers. This way you will have everything handy and accessible when needed. I would also recommend setting up a nice seating area for the owners to wait for their pet. For the first few visits owners may want to wait for their pets to be done grooming. You can set up this area in a separate section of the room. A small table with a few magazines is also a good idea. You will want your washing and grooming business to look similar to a beauty salon. It is also a good idea to have a few crates or a pen area where the dogs can wait until their owner arrives.
Once you have finished decorating your grooming and washing area you can start by finding some help. You will definitely need an assistant so that you can have someone answer the phone while you are with a dog, or if you are not very experienced in clipping nails and cleaning ears you can hire someone that is.
When it comes to advertising word of mouth will usually works well, but you can also try by posting a few flyers around town or visiting your local pet store, who does not offer grooming services. Most pet stores who don’t have their own grooming business will be happy to post your flyer or have your business cards available for your customers.
With a little advance planning you can have a very nice business in the comfort of your own home. Be sure to have an agreement that clearly outlines that price of your grooming and washing and have the owner sign it when dropping off their pet. It is also a good idea to have them take a close look to their pet before leaving and have them sign a paper that states they were satisfied with your service, and that their dog was properly cared for. This will help protect you from any problem later on down the line.
